My Sleep Number Bed Review 36 months later......
and I've decided it is time with an update on my report on the Select Comfort Mattress Sleep Number 5000. Am I being fair when i state I still dislike this bed? Well, that's my estimation and i am stickin' with it. For anyone on the market who love their Select Comfort Beds, I'm happy to suit your needs. However, don't hate me because That's not me so pleased about mine. Supply the opportunity though and study the review, contrary to popular belief I really do use a few positive points to produce in regards to the bed leading to the Select Comfort Customer care Department.
Now, That's not me to state this bed isn't only fabulous for a few people on the market. However , if you might have any type of sleep problem or moderate to severe aches & pains, continue reading.....
I'm during my 30's and that i possess a sleep problem that involves excessive daytime sleepiness, restless nighttime sleep, and waking unrefreshed. I additionally wake with moderate pain & stiffness. Apart from that I'm who is fit and also at a moderate weight.
Just like a Kid inside a Candy Shop
Since we needed a brand new mattress, I talked my hubby into using the Select Comfort Bed model 5000. After viewing the Select Comfort commercials, passing their mall store and drooling just like a baby over their brochures I figured this bed will be the cure-all for my sleep issues. I simply knew this bed will be an answered prayer and that i would awaken a brand new woman. And another plus was that my hubby received a healthcare professional discount in the company, which personally was like offering candy to some baby. I had been sold...hook, line & sinker. So we found the device generating that call to choose Comfort and in a matter of a couple of short days on our front lawn sat several huge boxes of a few things i was looking to be pure sleep heaven.
We purchased our bed in the king-size & think it is an actual pain to create, downfall number one. **There's a tad bit more about the create further inside the review.
I used to be pumped up about the potential for getting a great night's sleep, but was quickly disappointed another morning.
I chose to carry on while using the bed with hopes that we would soon belong to slumber land & wake feeling being a new woman. Well, it is often almost 2 months since our purchase & I can't feel any benefit.
I know think I'd have the same on any mattress. So something below the $1000 budget range could have been great now.
I'll switch around and present the few positive some tips i can name concerning this bed:
It is not all Bad. Here's some Positive:
The dual remotes. It functions well to get a couple who can't acknowledge the softness or firmness of your mattress.
I will no longer feel my better half tossing & turning during the night as there are 2 air chambers for your king-size bed.
You can forget squeaky box spring.
Your bed (once assembled) is light and extremely an easy task to move.
I am going to add that bed doesn't look different in look (positive Perhaps) when compared to a regular mattress and box spring set.
Some Assembly Required...maybe some grumbling too
Underneath platform with this bed is constructed of black plastic, which will come in several large sections. In addition , it includes a white cover which conceals the plastic base/platform the air bed/mattress sits on. **Assembling the beds base was one of the most difficult section of creating our bed. Each plastic piece must be prearranged exactly right. It took both my better half (who did plenty of grumbling) & I combined with usage of a hammer to gather your bed. The pieces don't just snap together just as easily because the directions say.
Screw it up Up (not literally needless to say - although what a thought)
Now when your bed is fully assembled you may connect a plastic tube to each and every air chamber at the head of the bed. Plug in your pump and fill your bed with air. Once this bed has inflated (after several minutes 15-20 approx) you then lie down in your usual sleep position and adjust the bed to your comfort level as part of finding your sleep number.
You also have to make sure you have sufficient room (approx. 2 ft.) between head of your bed and the wall or at least under the bed, for the air pump. The air pump is fairly quite during actual inflation/deflation, however, it does make a slight clicking noise (at least ours does) prior to and just following the setting of your sleep number. However, unless your partner is an extremely light sleeper so you don't have to worry about disturbing him/her.
As a note, you are provided with plugs in the event you should move or relocate your bed so you don't have to deflate the air chambers.
The Negative
The above things about this bed are fine, for the bells & whistles kind of bed, but I needed something to help me sleep better. So here goes the things I dislike and my overall reasons for rating this bed so low.
For those who have investigated purchasing a select comfort bed or have bought one, you'll likely recall what caught your attention about the select comfort brochure:
1. You'll sleep better on the bed that conforms for you. Personally, I do not feel any conform, even if I change my sleep number. The bed still feels hard/firm.
2. 77% Discovered increased energy. Sorry, but I am not for the reason that group.
3. 89% Reported improved sleep quality. I am not there either.
4. 93% Experienced back-pain relief. Well, my review states which i still wake with pain.
So, the majority of my review is all about me & my sleep. But when you've read a select comfort brochure, that is what this bed is suppose to become about. The way in which people sleep, the caliber of sleep, enhanced comfort of this bed, etc.
Don't Turn Away Because of Me
My review wasn't intended to make people turn away from the idea of a sleep number bed. I've read many reviews here on Epinions and on other various website(s). I know there are many people out there who love their Sleep Number bed. But, I also know there are many who hate it too. Regardless, it's not for me.
Furthermore, from my experience, I feel people who suffer from chronic pain should explore all his or her options before spending well over $1000 for a bed. Maybe this bed would work for them and maybe it wouldn't.
Both my husband and I are therapists, yet neither one of us feel this bed is worth recommending to our patients. But again, that's just 2 therapist out of "thousands of Therapists, Chiropractors, and other medical professionals" (sleep number brochure quote), who have found this bed to be a "better-sleep" solution and recommended it to their patients.
The Trial Period
Sadly enough for us, I suppose we will be stuck with this mattress/bed for many years since our in home trial period of 30 days is over. Speaking of the trial period, when i have mentioned, I've read many reviews relating to this bed. Consumers have mentioned the price associated with shipping this bed to Select Comfort. It isn't as simple as seeing a store, investing in a bed and creating a return if you do not enjoy it. Nope, the client needs to make all of the arrangements to ship your bed to Select Comfort. From what I've read and from good sense, I understand it isn't inexpensive to ship a bed to a business. I'm quite certain it is a tactic for folks much like me to maintain an item I'm simply not pleased with. If Select Comfort stood behind their product a lot and thought that they provide a superior bed they should offer to cover return shipping for unhappy customers.
So, in one consumer to a different, just please make certain, particularly if you are afflicted by any kind of moderate to severe pain & not only pressure in your hip(s) & shoulder(s), this bed is actually for you personally. It is a fortune to invest using the hopes that it'll be considered a cure for the aches & pains.
**UPDATE**
Here I'm updating this review on 12/22/2006. For individuals who own a Select Comfort Sleep Number Bed this can be of great importance for you personally. We now have recently moved and unfortunately (possibly the best thing since I believe about this) our movers didn't make use of the plugs so both air chambers deflated and shifted. Obviously we'd to unzip the bed, take away the black foam to reposition the environment chambers/mattresses. Then I discovered mold!! Yes, mold within the bed.
I contacted the Select Comfort Customer support Team at their toll-free number 1-800-472-7185 thinking I'd get the run-a-round and also the mold will be my problem to cope with. Obviously, I give their customer support department 2 thumbs on friendliness and client satisfaction!!
Some tips about what I had been told concerning the mold issue: apparently Select Comfort had utilized a material ( for his or her air chambers) previously which had difficulties with mold growth. Vehicle by using a treated material and possess prevailed without mold growth in the bed. Without the hesitation from customer care, I used to be told I might receive 2 new air chambers plus a new foam pad a totally free, all within 3-5 business days. We might also be given a box and prepaid shipping labels to ship the existing chambers and foam pads returning to the business. OK! That's a simple meal.
I recently wish I used to be as satisfied with your bed when i was with Select Comfort's Customer care Team.

One last Thought....or Two...
Some may wonder why I still need this bed 36 months later easily dislike it a great deal. Simple facts are, that i'm sure many consumers can relate, we merely do not want the mattress set we would really like to have. After paying an arm & leg, what sometimes feels like literally, for Select Comforts blow-up bed we figure we need to get our money's worth out of it. I've added a feather topper to the bed and that has actually improved the comfort, minimally. I try to listen to my body and if I'm feeling a little more aches or pains than usual, I'll adjust my setting and that seems to help somewhat too. Does all this mean I'm softening up to Select Comfort? NO WAY. It just means that I've slept on the bed of my dreams and although I can't afford $3500.00 worth of mattress and box springs right now, it means that I'll have to save a little here and there and look forward to the day that I can throw this over rated, over-priced, king-size blow-up bed in a box out the door!!
